Chapter 20
Loki
The Demon gnashes its teeth at me, insane in its own way. Certainly not sane enough to stay out of the Cage with the Headsman. Heâs the last Demon on the roster tonight, but not the first. That particular spot went to the Demoness whose blood I drank last night. Loretta and Co. consider it an unfair advantage to have Demon blood in my veins while I fight the legitimate convicts, so I killed her first. My jittery, twitchy, addicted body wants the hit of Demon blood, which I need to kill this Demon anyway. After seven hours of fighting in the throes of withdrawal symptoms, exhaustion clamors for me. But I canât loseâI have someone waiting at home for me.
The gong sounds and the Demon, like so many of his previous brethren, rushes at me, thinking that he will get the advantage of the offense. I keep my mind calm, staying focused as I dip back into the meditative battle trance Iâve nurtured over the years. This mind space clarifies the Demonâs movements; I see the projection of his attack in time to put up the appropriate defense, turning his attack into a counterattack time and again until I find the right moment: the moment where I can sacrifice a small amount of flesh for a bite and a mouthful of Demon blood.
I sacrifice a bit of my forearm, catching his claws with my arm, clamping onto his wrist, I turn the momentum of his attack into a body slam to the floor, pinning both claws down as I dart in and take a chunk of flesh, spitting the meat and diving for a mouthful of blood. I probably donât need more than what I got in my mouth with the piece of him I bit off, but I want the spectators to see and tremble at the brilliance of the message painted on my skin.
As soon as the magic hits, the chains wrapping around my body come to life, lighting up with a blue-white light that illuminates the whole arena. The Demon screams in pain struggling to get away from the radiance of my markings. My skin burns like it has never burned before. Even the torture that Erroll put me through canât compare to this, but it barely touches my mind because I have a Demon to kill.
I tear his head from his body, twisting it off like a milk top, then take him apart limb from limb. I pile his parts and pieces together and belch the Fires of Tartarus all over him, burning him to ash. The moment he dies, the magic in his blood that gives me these benefits and makes me feel like a crackhead disappears. The sudden drain and consequent fatigue go straight to my bones. The light from my markings fades slowly, then someone opens the Cage for me as the announcer pronounces the end of the night.
I keep my back straight and walk out of the Cage with the dignity of my station.
